Gold Dust Dracaena (Dracaena surculosa)
Dracaena surculosa (Japanese Bamboo)commonly known as Gold Dust Dracaenais native to the tropical climates of Africa and is a member of the Asparagaceae family. This plant is unique and attractive due to its shiny, pointed leaves with yellow or white spots. It thrives in moderate temperatures and high humidity. You can also grow it indoors.
Gold Dust Dracaena is a slow-growing, evergreen perennial houseplant. This is a very easy-to-grow houseplant that thrives in bright light. The plant requires moderate light; direct sunlight or excessive light will cause the leaves to brown or drop. Keep the soil moist, but not too wet, for regular growth. Cut back any overgrown stems, as their roots are growing in. Use a support to protect them from wind gusts.

Growing Tips for a Dracaena Surculosa
Light and Location:
Choose a location for your Dracaena surculosa plant that receives bright, indirect light or morning and evening sun. Choosing a darker location will weaken the plant and reduce its photosynthesis capacity.
These plants prefer moderate temperatures and high humidity, so water regularly but avoid excessive wetting. Avoid direct sunlight, as this will cause yellowing and leaf scorching. You can place your Japanese bamboo in a sunny north, east, or west-facing window. If it’s in a location with mild sunlight, it won’t need as much water.
Soil and Pot :
Plant in a pot with good drainage to prevent root rot. Prepare the potting soil mix by mixing perlite or sand with your garden soil and composted manure.
Humidity:
Moderate humidity is best for this plant. If the plant is indoors, the humidity is appropriate, but if the indoor environment is dry, place a tray of pebbles at the base to increase the humidity. Spray the leaves once or twice a month. This will keep the leaves moist and remove any accumulated dust.
Temperature:
The ideal temperature for Dracaena surculosa plants is 15°-24°C. If temperatures exceed this (in summer), move the plant to a protected location. It can also be kept indoors, but choose a well-lit area with a window. You can plant the plant outdoors, but protect it from direct sunlight. Indoor plants can be attacked by pests, so keep a close eye on them regularly.

Caring for a Dracaena surculosa Golden Dragon
Watering:
The Dracaena surculosa Golden Dragon plant thrives in bright light, as this helps dry out the plant’s soil more quickly. Water the plant’s top one-third of the way to meet its water needs. Drought and prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can cause yellowing and scorching of the leaves. Water the plants sparingly in winter and avoid frequent watering. Excessive watering can cause the roots to rot and the lower leaves to turn yellow.
Fertilizer:
Water regularly in the summer and use a fertilizer specifically for houseplants, reducing feeding during the colder months. During the growing season, apply an NPK fertilizer once or twice a month to keep your Golden Dragon plant healthy.
Prunning:
Remove yellowed leaves and dead stems to promote plant growth. Prune once a year to maintain shape. Use clean cutters to prevent bacterial and fungal diseases.
Repotting
Repot the plant every other year, as its roots become stunted as it grows. When repotting, choose a pot that is larger than the previous one.
Pests and Diseases:
Prolonged soil moisture and excessive watering can lead to root rot. Overwatering should be avoided during winter and for indoor plants. Ensure proper drainage for potted plants; this problem doesn’t occur with garden plants. If there’s a problem with yellowing roots or fungus in the soil, change the soil and repot the plant.
Excessive water keeps the leaves wet; cut such leaves, and do not let water accumulate in the pot.
Mealybugs are a common problem on the leaves and stems of indoor plants. They are usually spread from outdoor plants. You can remove them by wiping them with a damp cloth or by spraying them vigorously.
Propagation:
Transplant the Japanese bamboo ‘houseplant’ into an appropriately sized pot with adequate drainage. You can grow new plants by dividing the rhizomatous growth that emerges at the base of the plant.
You can also propagate dracaena from fresh stem cuttings. Plant a 2- to 3-inch cutting with at least one node in moist soil and water it lightly. After planting, keep the plant in a warm, moist environment. Transplant it to another pot once the roots have matured. The best time for division is spring or summer.
