I’m still astonished to catch sight of snowcapped mountains during my daily life. As a lifelong Southerner, first in the Carolina Piedmont and then in Central Texas, the highest terrain I expect to see on the horizon are rolling green hills. Here in Denver, I’m not living in the Rocky Mountains, but they sure are right thereas seen in this view across Sloan’s Lake.
Other summer sights at Sloan’s Lake Park include lots of waterfowl. Canada geese are abundant as well as cormorants. This scene amused me: a gulp of cormorants (yep, it’s called a gulp), with each bird atop its own piling for a peaceful nap. A goose looked on, perhaps with envy.
Midday is also naptime for mallards…
…and wood ducks (almost).
Goslings were up and about, however, and poking in the grass with vigilant parents in tow.
Wait, maybe it’s naptime after all.
